Astronomy Part Two

For all you grandparents out there there is much to see on the Internet that you can communicate to the infants and teenagers in your life.

First is the Hubble Site at HubbleSite.org. Currently they are offering many  additional pages with fascinating information among which are items about

  1. discoveries made by the Hubble telescope,
  2. the history behind the realisation that fuzzy patches in the sky were galaxies millions of light years from our Milky Way Galaxy
  3. In our solar system – the presence of tiny moons orbiting Pluto
  4. a discussion about the amount of water on Earth
  5. a star moving fast enough to travel from the Earth to the Moon in two hours
  6. A vision of the Night Sky tonight, adjusted for whatever the current date is together with an archive of other dates.
  7. Links to many education sites including Nasa, and Amazing Space.

These are only the few items I found so interesting, but you could design your own teaching session for your grandchildren and learn yourself along the way.

Another interesting site is the one for the SLOOH Space Camera at http://events.slooh.com

This site has pages about

  1. the search for life
  2. the aurora as seen from space
  3. the underground ocean of Jupiter’s moon Europa
  4. a podcast about the asteroid approaching earth in mid-February 2013 http://www.space.com/19432-close-approach-of-asteroid-2012-da14-fear-vs-fact-video.html
  5. information on viewing the night sky and an informative podcast showing you what to look for and giving you snippets of useful information.

Again these are just my choices from the many links available. There will be something of interest to any budding astronomer I am sure.
